Have you ever gotten to the place where you feel completely over your head? (If not then take some risks!) I would say that “over my head” has been the best way to describe the way I feel in regards to PNCC for the past three years.
Keep something in mind…Pointe North is the ONLY church that I have ever served as the senior pastor. People come by and see what God is doing here and say, “I am amazed.” I ALWAYS say the same thing–no one is more amazed by this than me!!!
SO…how does a leader lead in situations like this? It’s very simple–we’ve GOT to be students for the rest of our lives and LEARN all that we can…whatever that takes!!!
As I look back over the past 23 years of my life as a Christ Follower/minister I have noticed a pattern in me…and I am just being honest here…I have always sought to get around other people and places that are successful and seek to learn as much as I can. I understand that when God was passing out wisdom He skipped right over me…and so I have to “get” as much as I can from other people!!!
I will admit that there are times when I have been tempted to back away from “learning” and just focus on leading…but the Holy Spirit will not allow me to do that. Back in January I was struggling with whether or not to attend a conference in May. The Holy Spirit then led me to take as many people as we could to the "Unleash" conference. That was an awesome trip and experience for me and the 50 volunteers that went.Learning takes WORK…and God has been very clear to me that the day I stop growing is the day I HURT the church that I am leading.
Learning COSTS! It costs money and time. You have to be willing to spend both in order to continue to grow...no excuses! See, there is a verse in Proverbs that keeps me in this attitude.
"If you love learning, you love the discipline that goes with it - How shortsighted to refuse correction!" Proverbs 12:1
What are you learning right now? What are you doing that will grow you?
(Thanks for the "risk" stories...keep them coming)
I'm learning how to serve my leaders and it's scaring the pants off of me!!! After two years of digging VERY deep into spiritual authority, I have to say I am very careful about approaching this now. I love you guys and appreciate all you do to serve the church. I want to help you in any way I can, but I do not take helping you lightly. I am learning how God works through his leaders- his anointed. It's exciting and scary all at the same time...AND it is work, inside and out!!
